Tiny Toads

Tiny Baby American Toad

Описание:

This is a tiny baby American Toad. This is as tiny as they get. How do I know? Because I raised this toad from a tadpole, (as well as 5 other who are still in tadpole form) and it just lost its tail the day before I took this video. I got this toad about a month before, with 5 others who are still in tadpole form. Toads in tadpole form are very easy to take care of. I fed them a mix of algae and lettuce. I changed their water only once a week. They all started getting "big" fast. I say "big" because they were 3/8" when caught, and grew to be an inch long., and fairly fat. 3 days before this video was uploaded, this toad got both of its front legs, and like I said, it lost its tail 1 day before upload. It will be released tomorrow to survive on its own.

Here is a video of a tadpole the first day I had them:

Also, if they've lost their tail, best to keep them out of water or they'll drown. They like moist dirt. I'd recommend releasing the 4 of them right away, specifically in a place with bugs and shade. Also, I just uploaded a new video for this years first toad if you'd like to see it. I'm releasing the little guy/girl tomorrow.

JBtheProducer пишет: Nope. I usually change 1/4 of the water once a week, which is no big deal because I usually have them in 2 gallons or less...but i've let it go up to 3 weeks without changing it with no issues.

Kylie Alora пишет: May i ask? what do you feed a toad that small? I have some american toad tadpoles, and I dont know what to feed them when they turn into tiny toads. cool video tho, ^-^

JBtheProducer пишет: American Toads do not get pregnant. They mate and lay eggs simultaneously.

Kara Parent пишет: I have five American Toads right now. I plan on releasing four and keeping one. I plan on releasing the other four this weekend, until then do you think it would be safe to keep them in the same tank ?

JBtheProducer пишет: Its actually extremely easy to take care of them. Its best to only take a handful of them. I usually collect 6 at a time. I feed them lettuce every day or two, also algae from local ponds. After about 6 weeks, the same day they transform, I release them into a large wood pile I have (the dirt always stays moist and its a great spot for insects). I also made a toad hibernaculum, so any of the ones who survive the summer can hibernate in it if they choose to.

JBtheProducer пишет: haha.. I know it'll get bigger, ive seen some adults around here almost 5 inches long and fat! But I dont plan on keeping them, as soon as they hit full Toad form i release them back into the wild.

Kara Parent пишет: They all have just transformed from tadpole to toad.

JBtheProducer пишет: Yeah, if you use lettuce they recommend (and so do I) boiling it so its soft for them to chew. you can boil a bunch and freeze it for when you need it. Last year I only used lettuce, no algae, and didnt have any issues, this year I'm mixing it up a bit. They don't seem to care either way. I got about 8 frogpoles and 6 toadpoles so it might be a bit too many, though I separate them based on size (reduces cannibalism)

JBtheProducer пишет: i dont feed them as toads, only as tadpoles, once they hit toad stage like this one did, i release them back into the wild. Though if you read the comments someone said feed them flightless fruit flies.

JBtheProducer пишет: the 'tadpole' stage is actually true to all amphibians, though salamanders have a slightly different form, but it highly resembles the same stage. If you'd like to see American Toad Tadpoles, check out my channel for a few videos of them before they transformed.
