Cinnamon Apples with Dumplings

Cinnamon Apple Dumplings with a Hat

Описание:

Great for Autumn or anytime, this sweet treat is a perfect addition to dinner, or as the dessert. You can even add a scoop of ice cream or whipped topping. The reduction in the amount of traditional pastry versus "normal" dumplings makes this a no-guilt delight!

Apple Dumplings with a Hat

For each apple:

1 tsp maple syrup powder
1 tsp honey powder (or sugar or brown sugar)
2 tsp Vietnamese cinnamon
1 pat of butter
prepared piecrust (homemade or refrigerated)
eggwash (one egg whipped with 1 tbl water or milk)

Roll out piecrust and cut out a 3" circle with the top of a glass. This will be the topper for the dumpling. Also cut a small leaf out of the pie crust.

Rub butter in the bottom of an oven-safe pan.

Core the apple, then peel.

Mix the powders: maple syrup, honey, and cinnamon. Roll the apple in the powder. Set on the prepared pan and add a pat of butter and any remaining powder to the center. Top with piecrust topper and brush with egg wash. Then add the piecrust leaf and brush again.

Place in a 425 degree oven for approximately 40 minutes- or until the apple feels soft when poked with a knife tip.

Substitutions: If liquid maple syrup is used, drizzle the syrup on the outside of the apple. Can use white or brown sugar in place of the honey powder.

You'll Need:

1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
6 tablespoons granulated sugar, divided
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup milk
1 cup apple juice or cider
1 tablespoon cinnamon candies
2 1/2 cups sliced, peeled apples
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Procedures : Combine 1/2 cup flour, 4 tablespoons sugar, salt and baking powder. With a pastry blender or two forks, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs; set aside.

In 2-quart saucepan, combine the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar and remaining 1 tablespoon of flour. Add apple juice, stirring until smooth. Mix in cinnamon candies and apples. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until mixture boils.

Stir milk into flour and butter mixture, mixing until smooth. Drop dough, about 1/4 at a time, over boiling apple mixture. Cover pan and cook over low heat for about 10 minutes or until dumplings are cooked. (Cooked dumplings will resemble little cakes. The dough drops to the bottom of the pan when it enters and will rise when it is done.)

Cool slightly before serving in individual dishes. Top with whipped topping or whipped cream.

Yields 4 to 6 servings
