Bourbon Street Parade - Maribo Jazz Festival

July 19th 2009 - A great day in beautiful Maribo, in sunny Denmark and Jill Spencer brought her video camera along, for which we are all very grateful!
Fifteen musicians were on stage together from four different countries, so it was a pretty special event and the final concert in the very successful Maribo jazz festival, taking place at the Hylddalen (stadium).
It brought together six Hot Five Jazzmakers from Canada, six New Orleans Delights from Denmark & Sweden and three international jazz celebrities, all together under the title Kjeld Brands New Orleans All-Stars. Putting this many players together, for the festivals finale concert, could be considered a bit of a gamble but, under the capable musical direction of trumpeter Derek Winters, it worked like a charm!
Having Marilyn Keller, from the USA on centre stage, to sing with us, was the icing on the cake, I thought.
Here we are hearing the Bourbon Street Parade which was the second number in the concert and it certainly got things going! All the paired instruments worked together as if they had done this many times before.
The reeds were Sarah Spencer tenor sax; Janet Shaw clarinet & alto sax; Kjeld Brandt - clarinet. Trombones - Bengt Hansson & Brian Towers. String basses Stephan Karfve & Brian Day. Trumpet & MC Derek Winters. Cornet - Andrej Saradin. Tenor banjos Erling Lindhart & Jamie Macpherson. Piano keyboards Hans Pederson & Reide Kaiser and the solitary drummer was Claus Lindhardt.
For the Hot Five Jazzmakers it was the last concert of their tour, which had started at the Whitley Bay International Jazz Festival in England, ten days earlier. It was a grand way to finish!

You'll Need:
INGREDIENTS for Cake:
1 egg, separated
3/4 cup sugar
1-1/8 cups self-rising flour
1/4 cup corn oil
1/2 cup milk
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
INGREDIENTS for Sauce:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup dry sherry
1/4 cup anisette
whipped cream
Procedures : Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine egg yolk and sugar, beating until light yellow in color. Add remaining cake ingredients except egg white, mixing well. Beat egg white until stiff but not dry; fold into batter. Pour into greased muffin tins. Bake about 15 minutes or until golden. Remove cakes while still warm. Arrange in a flat dish with sides. To make sauce, combine sugar and water; boil until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in sherry and anisette. Pour over warm cakes. Chill overnight. Serve with whipped cream.
YIELDS: 24 cupcakes
